The day of the lotus

The day of the lotus

Although the famed lotus flowers in Echo Park failed to bloom this year, a large patch of Nelumbo nucifera -- commonly known as the Indian or Chinese lotus, and of great religious significance to Buddhists -- is blossoming full force at UCLA's Hannah Carter Japanese Garden and will be through mid-August.

The garden is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., by reservation only. For information, contact gardens@support.ucla.edu or 310-794-0320.
