UCLA faculty experts advisory: transportation and public transit

The Los Angeles County Transportation Funding Collaborative is bringing together leading experts in government, academia and the private sector in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 10, to discuss strategies for financing transportation improvements. Two UCLA scholars are among the scheduled panelists. They and other UCLA experts can address transportation-related issues raised at the conference.

 

Brian Taylor, professor of urban planning and director of the UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies, is an expert in the politics of transportation finance, the measuring of equity in public transit and the linkages between public subsidies and transit performance. A scheduled panelist at the conference, he can address emerging trends, including congestion pricing and toll lanes.

Donald Shoup, professor or urban planning, is among the nation's leading authorities on the link between transportation and land use and is a scheduled panelist at the conference. He argues that free parking increases solo driving and that reducing subsidies for parking will reduce traffic congestion. He is available to comment on these and similar issues.

Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, professor and chair of the UCLA Department of Urban Planning, seeks to integrate social and physical issues in urban planning and architecture. She can comment on the effect of new rail transit lines on urbanization and community rebuilding and the need for guidelines for the development of transit station neighborhoods.

Matthew Kahn, an environmental economist at the UCLA Institute of the Environment, researches the links between consumer and institutional behavior and the environment and is the author of the 2006 book "Green Cities: Urban Growth and the Environment." He can comment on the role of economics in environmentalism.
