UCLA Students Comment on VP Debate
KCBS-Channel 2 and KCAL-Channel 9 reported Thursday on UCLA political science students' reactions to Thursday's vice presidential debates. The students are enrolled in a course on the 2008 election taught by UCLA assistant professor of political science Lynn Vavreck. Vavreck and four students were interviewed in the coverage.
 
Cyber-Bullying a Common Scourge
The New York Times' health blog reports today on a study led by UCLA psychology professor Jaana Juvonen that found that nearly three in four teenagers had been bullied online during a recent 12-month period and that only one in 10 reported such cyber-bullying incidents to parents or other adults. Juvonen is quoted.

Today’s Diverse Issues in Higher Education and Thursday’s New America Media report on a new study co-authored and edited by Paul Ong, UCLA professor of urban planning, social welfare and Asian American studies, that examines the electoral power and civic engagement of the Asian American community. Canada’s Globe and Mail reports today on a study co-authored by Miguel Unzueta, assistant professor of human resources and organizational behavior at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, that suggests that individuals with little in common will band together and forge a common identity when presented with an enemy.
 
California Schools Fail to Make the Grade
A Los Angeles Times education blog reported Thursday on a recent study co-authored by Patricia Gandara, professor of education and co-director of the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles at UCLA, that assessed current conditions in California's schools. Gandara was quoted.

Saliva Test Can Detect Oral Cancer
HealthDay News reports today on research led by Shen Hu, associate professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry, showing that a simple test of proteins in an individual's saliva can accurately detect a common form of oral cancer. Hu is quoted.

UCLA Develops World's Fastest Bar Code Reader
A Nature.com blog reports today on the development by UCLA electrical engineering professor Bahram Jalali and colleagues at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of a bar code reader that is nearly a thousand times faster than any device currently in use.
