Medical Students Benefit From Diversity
Inside Higher Ed, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Medical News Today report today on a study led by UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute that found that students who attended racially diverse medical schools said they felt better prepared to care for diverse patient populations. Study co-author LuAnn Wilkerson, senior associate dean for medical education at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Maurice Scott, a fourth-year student at the Geffen School, are quoted in the Post-Dispatch article.
 
Job Loss Turns Social Butterflies to Hermits
HealthDay News reported Tuesday on research by Jennie Brand, UCLA assistant professor of sociology, that found that workers who have experienced job loss are less likely to participate in community and social activities than their continuously employed peers. Brand was quoted in the coverage.
 
Martial Art Improves Seniors’ Slumber
Dr. Michael Irwin, the Norman Cousins Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of the UCLA Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, was interviewed Tuesday on the CBS “Early Show” about his research showing that older adults with moderate sleep problems were able to sleep better when they practiced the Chinese martial art tai chi chih.
