Bill Clinton, U.S. Rep. Waxman top list of UCLA commencement speakers

Former President Bill Clinton, U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman and a host of other distinguished speakers will deliver keynote remarks at UCLA's commencement ceremonies, which begin May 9 and run through June 14.
 
This year, UCLA will award approximately 10,400 bachelor's, master's, doctoral and professional degrees. Nearly 8,500 students are expected to participate in commencement ceremonies, and an estimated 90,000 guests are expected to attend commencement-related activities.
 
Bill Clinton will deliver the keynote address at the College of Letters and Science ceremony on Friday, June 13, at 5 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. Since leaving office, Clinton has continued his commitment to public service through the initiatives of the William J. Clinton Foundation, which works to make HIV/AIDS treatments more widely available in developing countries, fights against climate change, creates economic opportunities in the U.S. and seeks solutions to other major global problems.
 
Henry Waxman will deliver remarks at the School of Public Health ceremony, scheduled for Friday, June 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Royce Hall. Waxman has represented the 30th congressional district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1975. A leader on health and environmental issues, Waxman has fought for universal health insurance, comprehensive Medicare and Medicaid coverage, tobacco regulation, AIDS research and treatment, air and water quality standards, pesticide regulations, nursing home quality standards, women's health research, reproductive rights, affordable prescription drugs and communities' right to know about pollution levels.

  • Morgan Chu, a leading intellectual property litigator with the law firm of Irell & Manella and a recipient of last year's UCLA Medal, will deliver keynote remarks to graduates at the School of Law commencement on Friday, May 9, at 3:30 p.m. in Dickson Court North.
 
  • Haile T. Debas, executive director of global health sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, will deliver remarks at the Hippocratic Oath ceremony for graduates of the David Geffen School of Medicine on Friday, May 30, at 5 p.m. in Dickson Court North.
 
  • Paul Goldhaber, former dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and former president of both the International Association for Dental Research and the American Association of Dental Research, will address graduates of the School of Dentistry on Sunday, June 1, at 10 a.m. in Royce Hall.
 
  • Robert K. Ross, president and chief executive officer of the California Endowment, will address graduates of the School of Public Affairs on Friday, June 13, at 9 a.m. in Royce Hall.
 
  • William C. Weldon, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson & Johnson, will address graduates of the Anderson School of Management on Friday, June 13, at 4 p.m. in Wilson Plaza.
 
  • Colin Callender, president of HBO Films, will deliver remarks to graduates of the School of Theater, Film and Television on Friday, June 13, at 4 p.m. in Dickson Court North.
 
  • Joan Shaver, professor and dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Nursing, will deliver the keynote address at the School of Nursing ceremony on Saturday, June 14, at 8 a.m. in Royce Hall.
 
  • Charles M. Vest, president of the National Academy of Engineering and vice chair of the National Research Council, will deliver remarks to graduates of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science on Saturday, June 14, at 12:30 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
 
  • Hilda Solis, who represents the 32nd congressional district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives, will deliver remarks at the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. in Wilson Plaza.
 
  • Peter Nabokov, anthropologist, scholar, author and professor in the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures, will address graduates of the School of the Arts and Architecture on Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. in Dickson Court North.
