UC-Sponsored Animal Research Legislation
Inside Higher Ed reports today and the Los Angeles Times, the San Jose Mercury News, the Santa Cruz Sentinel, United Press International and the Chronicle of Higher Education reported Saturday on the unanimous approval of aa University of California-sponsored bill in the state Legislature that aims to protect researchers at UCLA and other universities from harassment and violence by groups and individuals opposed to the use of animals in laboratory research.
 
UCLA Faculty Collaborate on Mexican Symphony
KABC-Channel 7'sVista L.A. on Sunday highlighted the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance of “América Tropical” by UCLA ethnomusicology professor Steven Loza at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The piece was accompanied by a narrative, multimedia display created by UCLA theater professor Jose Luis Valenzuela and Judy Baca, a professor in the UCLA César E. Chávez Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies and co-founder of UCLA’s Social and Public Art Resource Center. Loza, Valenzuela and Baca were quoted as well as Octavio Pescador, visiting assistant professor of Chicano studies and associate director of the UCLA Center for Community Learning.
 
Networks Spotlight UCLA Olympic Lab
Anthony Butch, director of the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, was interviewed Thursday in an ABC News story about the relatively small number of Olympic athletes who have tested positive for banned substances this year.Butch also discussed the testing challenges inherent in catching athletes who use banned performance-enhancing supplements at the Olympics in an Aug. 13 NBC News story.
