Mystery of Northern Lights Uncovered
Research by Vassilis Angelopoulos, UCLA associate professor of earth and space sciences, that identified the likely energy source behind the aurora borealis, or northern lights, was featured today by the U.K.’s Daily Mail and Independent, Wednesday by United Press International, and Tuesday by National Geographic News. Angelopoulos was quoted in all stories.
 
Scientists Study Ocean’s Monster Waves
Reuters reported Wednesday that scientists at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science had succeeded in using light waves to model oceanic “rogue waves” — huge, seemingly random waves that can destroy large ships. Daniel Solli, a UCLA Engineering researcher and one of the investigators involved in the study, was quoted.
 
Brain Training for Boomers
UCLA’s Memory Training Course, designed by Dr. Gary Small, clinical professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences and director of the UCLA Center on Aging, is cited today in a San Francisco Chronicle article about programs that help aging baby boomers maintain their mental fitness.
 
Designing ‘Green’ Government Buildings
Thom Mayne, UCLA professor of architecture and urban design, was interviewed about his design of San Francisco’s Federal Building as part of a PBS series on sustainable architecture that aired Monday on KCLS-Channel 58. The program will air on KCET-Channel 28 at a future date.
 
UCLA Surgery Dept. Receives $30 Million
The Los Angeles Business Journal reported Monday on a $30 million donation to the UCLA Department of Surgery by Robert and Kelly Day. The gift will create a surgical endowment and establish four new academic chairs in surgery. Dr. Ronald Busuttil, executive chair of the surgery department and chief of the division of liver and pancreas transplantation at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted.

Buonomano, associate professor of neurobiology and psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute, was quoted Wednesday in a Houston Chronicle article about a study testing whether fear and high stress can slow down an individual’s perception of time.
 
Ann Carlson
Carlson, professor of law and director of UCLA’s Environmental Law Center, is quoted today in a Sacramento Bee article about a federal judge’s rejection Wednesday of a bid by major automakers to block a California law requiring reductions in automobile emissions.
