Mag Names 2 UCLA Profs Among 'Brightest People Alive'
Discover magazine has named mathematics professor Terence Tao, who holds UCLA’s James and Carol Collins Chair in the College of Letters and Science, and Joseph Teran, UCLA assistant professor of mathematics, two of the 50 “Best Brains in Science” in its special December issue. Tao was praised as "one of the most prolific and esteemed mathematicians in the nation," and Teran was lauded for his work in developing "virtual surgery."
Extremists Claim Responsibility for Arson Attack
Reports that anti–animal research extremists claimed responsibility for a recent arson attack outside a Los Angeles home they mistakenly believed belonged to a UCLA researcher were highlighted Wednesday by a U.S. News & World Report blog and Tuesday by a Scientist magazine blog. Several vehicles were destroyed in the attack.
Rethinking Clean AirStandards
KPCC-89.3 FM reported today on theSouthern California Environmental Report Card issued by UCLA's Institute of the Environment. The report's authors, Beate Ritz, associate professor of epidemiology at the UCLA School of Public Health, and Michelle Wilhelm, assistant professor-in-residence of epidemiology at the School of Public Health, called on air quality regulators toconsider a growing body of evidence linking air pollution topremature birth, lower birth weight, birth defects and respiratory diseases in early life.
Cancer Drug May Help Scleroderma
The Oregonian reported Wednesday on a clinical trial led by Dr. Daniel Furst, a professor of rheumatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, testing whether the drug Gleevec, used primarily to treat leukemia, can help reverse symptoms of scleroderma, an autoimmune disorder that damages the skin and internal organs.
