Cancer Patient Meets Lifesaving Blood Donors
The Los Angeles Times, KABC-Channel 7, KNBC-Channel 4, KTLA-Channel 5 and Sing Tao USA reported Saturday on a former leukemia patient at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center who met for the first time with the diverse group of 11 blood-platelet donors who sustained her during her 12 months of cancer therapy. The reunion was the first of its kind at UCLA.
UCLA to Expand Hospital Space
The Los Angeles Times reports today on the UC Board of Regents’ plan to rent a new medical facility in Santa Monica to provide more room for the teaching and health care programs of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. David Feinberg, CEO and associate vice chancellor of the UCLA Hospital System, was quoted.
Using Cell Phones to Help the Environment
An article in Saturday’s New York Times on wireless sensor technology highlighted cell phone–based sensor applications developed by researchers at UCLA’s Center for Embedded Networked Sensing that allow individuals to measure environmental pollution and to identify invasive weeds, which can be harmful to plant and animal life. Deborah Estrin, the center’s director, was quoted.
Preventing Huntington’s Disease
Miller-McCune magazine reported Sunday on a study led by X. William Yang, associate professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, in which researchers identified a molecular "switch" that can prevent the onset of Huntington’s disease in mice. Yang was quoted.
Judge Alito’s Reaction to Obama
The Huffington Post on Thursday featured a column by Adam Winkler, UCLA professor of law, on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s reaction during Wednesday’s State of the Union address to comments by President Obama on the recent high court decision striking down limits on corporate political speech.
Blind UCLA Law Grad Wins Case
The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that a federal judge has ruled that a blind woman who recently graduated from the UCLA School of Law can use special computer software for reading assistance when she takes the California bar examination later this month. The San Francisco Chronicle and United Press International reported on the ruling Sunday.
Researchers Sequence Brain Cancer Cell's Genome
Ivanhoe Newswire reports today that a team led by Dr. Stanley Nelson, UCLA professor of human genetics and a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, has successfully performed the first complete genomic sequencing of a brain cancer cell line.
Cleaner Air, Fewer Ear Infections
City News Service reported Sunday on a study by UCLA researchers and colleagues that found a correlation between improvements in air quality over the past decade and a reduction in cases of ear infections in children. Study co-author Dr. Nina Shapiro, director of pediatric otolaryngology at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and an associate professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted.

Idaho’s KTVB-Channel 7 reported Sunday on Operation Mend, a collaborative effort between UCLA and a Texas-based military burn center to aid U.S. soldiers disfigured in combat. Dr. Timothy Miller, chief of reconstructive and plastic surgery at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, was featured.
