Protein Treatment May Help Fight Alzheimer’s
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports today on research by scientists at UCLA, UC San Diego and New York University that found that treatments using a protein known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor improved neural and cognitive function in animals with Alzheimer’s disease–like symptoms. Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science, is quoted.
Avoiding Earmarks in Stimulus Package
Thursday’s Business Week featured an op-ed piece by John de Figueiredo, associate professor of strategic management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management and the UCLA School of Law, suggesting that a commission of outside experts could help keep political influence and favoritism out of the $800-plus billion economic stimulus bill currently making its way through Congress.

An article in Saturday’s New York Times about the growing demand for digital archivists highlighted the UCLA Library’s Digital Collections program. Jacob Nadal, a preservationist with the UCLA Library, and Victoria McCargar, a preservation consultant and lecturer in the UCLA Department of Information Studies, were quoted in the article.

Cell Phone Can Perform Blood Tests
The Science Channel reported Friday on the development by Aydogan Ozcan, UCLA assistant professor of electrical engineering, and colleagues at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science of a prototype cell phone that uses a lens-free imaging technique to analyze blood, saliva and other fluid samples. Ozcan, who is also a member of UCLA's California NanoSystems Institute, was interviewed.
