Officials Consider Enrollment Options
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday on proposals by some University of California officials to increase revenue and offset state budget cuts by enrolling a larger number of out-of-state students at UC campuses. Two nonresident UCLA undergraduates were quoted.
 
Should Undocumented Students Pay More?
The Los Angeles Times reports today on an upcoming California Supreme Court case challenging the constitutionality of a state law that allows undocumented college and university students, including those at UCLA, to pay in-state tuition rather than more expensive nonresident tuition. A recent UCLA graduate and an undergraduate are quoted.
 
Troop Withdrawal Might Not Be So Easy
Saturday’s Los Angeles Times featured an op-ed piece by Kal Raustiala, professor of law and director of the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations, on the implications of the recently approved U.S.-Iraqi agreement that sets a timetable for the withdrawal of American military forces from Iraq.
 
UCLA Preservationist Honored by Film Critics
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday, and the New York Times and Hollywood Reporter reported Saturday, that UCLA Film & Television Archive preservationist Ross Lipman has been honored with a film heritage award from the National Society of Film Critics for his restoration of “The Exiles,” a 1961 film about a group of Native Americans living in Los Angeles’ Bunker Hill neighborhood.
 
Treatment for Disfiguring Eye Disease
Ivanhoe Newswire reported Tuesday on a procedure developed by Dr. Robert Goldberg, chief of orbital and ophthalmic plastic surgery at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, to repair damage wreaked by Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that attacks muscle tissue in the eyes, causing them to protrude from their sockets.

Layne, professor of epidemiology and environmental health sciences at the UCLA School of Public Health and a member at UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute, was quoted Sunday in a Los Angeles Times article about the reemergence of Asian bird flu in Hong Kong.
 
Dr. David Reuben
Reuben, professor and chief of geriatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted Sunday in a Boston Globe article about research suggesting that the stress causes U.S. presidents to age at an accelerated rate.
 
Richard Rumelt
Rumelt, the Harry and Elsa Kunin Professor of Business and Society at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, is quoted today in a Toronto Globe & Mail column about strategic planning for businesses during the economic recession.
