Union Workers Strike at UC Campuses
The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Long Beach Press-Telegram and KTTV-Channel 11 report today that a number of University of California employees represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees initiated a strike today at UC campuses across the state, including UCLA. KNBC-Channel 4 reported on the union’s activities Sunday.
 
UCLA Med Center Ranked Among Top 3 in Nation
The Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Daily News, KCBS-Channel 2, KNBC-Channel 4, KCAL-Channel 9, KNX-1070 AM and KFWB 980 AM reported Friday that UCLA Medical Center had been ranked the No. 3 hospital in the country— and the best in the western U.S. for the 19th consecutive year— in U.S. News & World Report’s annual “America’s Best Hospitals” survey. The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported the rankings Sunday. Dr. Gerald S. Levey, vice chancellor for medical sciences and dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted by KNBC and KCBS. Dr. David Feinberg, chief executive officer and interim vice chancellor of the UCLA Hospital System, was interviewed by KCBS, KNBC, KCAL, KNX and KFWB.
 
Researchers Use Cold Virus to Track Prostate Cancer
Reuters and BBC News reported Friday, and China’s Xinhua news service reports today, on a study led by Dr. Lily Wu, a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, that used an engineered common cold virus to track prostate cancer cells as they spread to the lymph nodes using positron emission tomography. Wu is quoted in the coverage.
 
Producer Endows UCLA Chair in Yiddish
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency news service reported Sunday that television writer and producer Michael Ross has donated $4 million to endow an academic chair in Yiddish language and culture through UCLA’s Center for Jewish Studies. David Myers, professor of history and director of the center, was quoted.
 
UCLA Bridge’s Colorful Past
Today’s Los Angeles Times features a story about the history of UCLA’s Dickson Court bridge. Bob Parker, manager of customer relations with the UCLA Facilities Management department, is quoted.

An article in today’s Los Angeles Times highlights research by Michael Lu, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, on the ways in which pregnant mothers’ health habits may affect their babies’ risk of obesity.
 
Women’s HIV Gel May Work Better for Men
HealthDay News reported Thursday on research by Sally Blower, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and a member of the UCLA AIDS Institute, that found that vaginal microbicides may be of more benefit to men than women in preventing HIV infection.

An op-ed piece on immigration in today’s Austin American Statesman highlights a recent UCLA study by Edward Telles, UCLA professor of sociology, and Vilma Ortiz, UCLA associate professor of sociology, that examined assimilation trends among Mexican Americans over the past four decades.
 
Progress in Treatment of Brain Cancer
The Ventura County Star reports today on a UCLA brain-cancer vaccine program led by Dr. Linda Liau, professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a researcher at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center.
