Researchers ID Source of Northern Lights
Vassilis Angelopoulos, UCLA professor of Earth and space sciences, was featured Wednesday on a “Nova Science Now” television segment about a NASA-funded satellite mission studying the substorms in space that lead to the explosive releases of energy responsible for the aurora borealis, or northern lights. Angelopoulos is the mission’s principal investigator.
 
Chronic Stress Linked to Physical Illness
Asian News International reports today on research by Rita Effros, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, that found that a hormone released when individuals experience stress contributes to the aging of immune cells, potentially leading to physical illnesses. Effros was quoted.
 
Can Grief Be Addictive?
Research led by UCLA assistant professor of psychiatry Mary-Frances O’Connor that found that certain types of chronic grief activate reward centers in the brain, possibly giving sorrowful memories addiction-like properties, was featured Wednesday by KNBC-Channel 4 and today by MSNBC. O’Connor was quoted.
 
Prof’s Plan to Reduce L.A. Traffic
A proposed plan by UCLA professor of urban planning Donald Shoup to help ease traffic in Los Angeles by increasing the cost of public parking was featured today in a Los Angeles Times story on the City Council’s approval of an increase in parking-meter rates and hours of operation.
