Prof Teaches Cops New Techniques
Sunday’s Ventura County Star featured a profile of R. Edward Geiselman, UCLA professor of inter-disciplinary psychology, who developed an interviewing technique used by law enforcement officials to question possible suspects in criminal investigations. Geiselman was quoted.
 
Breakthrough on Glucose-Transport Molecules
Asian News International reported Friday on research by UCLA physiologists Ernest Wright and Jeff Abramson that used X-ray crystallography to reveal the structure of a class of proteins that pump glucose into cells. The proteins are used in the treatment of chronic diarrhea in children and may be helpful in the development of drugs to treat diabetes and obesity. Abramson was quoted.
 
Film About Native Americans Restored
The New York Times reported Saturday on the recent restoration of “The Exiles” — a 1961 film about a group of Native Americans living in Los Angeles’ Bunker Hill neighborhood — by Ross Lipman, a preservationist with the UCLA Film & Television Archive.
 
Suicide Rates Among Doctors
Today’s Baltimore Sun features an op-ed piece by Dr. Claire Panosian Dunavan, clinical professor of infectious diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, discussing the factors that may contribute to the high rate of suicide among physicians.
 
Two UCLA Studies Examine Fair Play
Canada’s Ottawa Citizen reports today on a brain-imaging study by Golnaz Tabibnia, a postdoctoral fellow at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, UCLA associate professor of psychology Matthew Lieberman and UCLA psychology graduate student Ajay Satpute that showed that the human brain responds to being treated fairly the same way it responds to winning money and eating chocolate. The article also highlights a follow-up study by Tabibnia, Lieberman and colleagues at England’s University of Cambridge showing that serotonin levels can affect the way in which individuals perceive fair and unfair treatment. Tabibnia and Lieberman are quoted.
 
UCLA Anderson’s Business Journalism Awards
The New York Times reported Thursday on the winners of the 2008 Gerald Loeb Awards, presented annually by the UCLA Anderson School of Management for outstanding business journalism.
 
Reversing Mental Retardation
A study by Dr. Alcino Silva, professor of neurobiology and a member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute, and Dan Ehninger, a UCLA postgraduate researcher in neurobiology, that found that learning disorders resulting from a genetic mutation that causes autism in humans can be reversed in mice was featured by the Philadelphia Inquirer on Sunday and by the Spanish–English newspaper chain Eastern Group Publications on Thursday. Silva was quoted in the coverage.

The July edition of Entrepreneur magazine features a brief article on Peter Guber, visiting professor of film, television and visual media at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, and his views on the importance of using storytelling techniques in entrepreneurship.
 
Can Grief Be Addictive?
The Los Angeles Times reports today on research led by UCLA assistant professor of psychiatry Mary-Frances O’Connor that found that certain types of chronic grief activate reward centers in the brain, possibly giving sorrowful memories addiction-like properties. O’Connor is quoted.
