Gay Marriage and the Economy
Reuters and the San Francisco Chronicle report today on a study by the UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy that examined the potential impact of legalized same-sex marriage on the California economy. Study co-author M.V. Lee Badgett, UCLA visiting professor of law and research director at the institute, is quoted. The Spanish-language newspaper Hoy reported on the study Wednesday.
 
How the Internet Was Born
An article in July’s Vanity Fair on the evolution the Internet highlights the work of Leonard Kleinrock, professor of computer science at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, whose advances in data networking in the late 1960s provided the technological foundation on which the Internet is built. Kleinrock and Vint Cerf, who worked with Kleinrock as a UCLA graduate student, are quoted.

HealthDay News reported Wednesday on a study led by Dr. Allen Nissenson, professor of nephrology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of UCLA’s Davita Dialysis Unit, that explored racial disparities in the progression and treatment of kidney disease in the U.S.

Today’s Los Angeles Wave features a front-page profile of Dr. Shauna Blake, 41, a former high school dropout and mother of two who achieved her dream of becoming a physician by graduating from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA last Friday.
 
Scientists ID Source of Epileptic Condition
Reuters reported Wednesday on research by UCLA scientists that identified the mutated gene responsible for the condition known as childhood absence epilepsy. Study co-author Dr. Richard W. Olsen, professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was quoted.
