State Regulators Fine Campus on Lab Safety
The Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press and the LAist blog reported Saturday that the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) was citing and fining UCLA for alleged violations related to safety in campus research laboratories. China Radio International, China’s Xinhua News Service, a Science magazine blog and several other blogs reported the story Sunday, and Inside Higher Ed and California Watch blogs reported the story today. Kevin Reed, UCLA vice chancellor for legal affairs, was quoted by the LA Times, the AP and California Watch.
Prof Weighs in on Sudden Acceleration
Richard Schmidt, UCLA professor emeritus of cognitive psychology, was featured Thursday in a CNBC “Street Signs” segment on Toyota's recent problems, in which he described his research on sudden-acceleration accidents in the late 1980s and early '90s, which he said were often the result of driver error.
Prof Turns 'Stucco Box' Into Architectural Jewel
The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday on the remodeling of a Silver Lake home by Roger Sherman, adjunct associate professor of architecture and urban design at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture and director of the UCLA-based urban think tank cityLAB. Sherman was quoted.
The Financial Bubble Experiment
The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday on the “Financial Bubble Experiment,” a project launched by UCLA professor of geophysics and complex systems theorist Didier Sornette that is attempting to identify four financial bubbles developing in Europe and forecast when they will peak. Sornette was quoted.
Miller-McCune magazine reported Friday on a UCLA-led study that found that California wines made with organically grown grapes rate higher than conventional wines and that they also command better prices as long as they don't say "organic" on the label. Study author Magali Delmas, associate professor of management at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and the UCLA Anderson School of Management, was quoted.
Judge Rules UC Must Refund Millions to Students
The Chronicle of Higher Education reported Friday, and the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday, that a state judge has ruled the University of California must pay $38 million to nearly 3,000 current and former professional school students who claimed their fees were raised after the university pledged to keep them level. The lead plaintiff in the case is a UCLA School of Law graduate. A Washington Post blog reports on the case today.

A U.S. News & World Report blog reported Thursday on a recent Daily Bruin article about UCLA students participating in unsanctioned "Undie Runs" and the possibility of the campus reinstating the tri-annual tradition, which was banned in July 2009 due to safety concerns.
Students Victims of Home Invasion Robbery
KCBS-Channel 2, KNBC-Channel 4, KTLA-Channel 5, KABC-Channel 7, KWHY-22 and several San Francisco Bay Area news outlets reported Thursday on a home invasion robbery at a Westwood apartment that targeted several UCLA students.
