Quarter of Californians Lack Health Insurance
The Los Angeles Times reports today, and the Associated Press reported Monday, on a study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research showing that nearly 2 million Californians lost their health insurance during 2008 and 2009 and that more than 8 million residents are now uninsured. E. Richard Brown, the center's director, and Shana Alex Lavarreda, the center's director of health insurance studies, were quoted in the LA Times.
State Regulators Fine Campus on Lab Safety
A Chronicle of Higher Education blog reported Monday, and a Nature blog reported today, that the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) was citing and fining UCLA for alleged violations related to safety in campus research laboratories. Kevin Reed, UCLA vice chancellor for legal affairs, was quoted in Nature.
Prof Debates Existence of God
The Pasadena Star News reported Sunday on an ABC "Nightline"–sponsored debate about the existence of God that featured Sam Harris, professor of psychiatry at the UCLA Staglin Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and author of "The End of Faith." A version of the debate will air on ABC March 23.
Prof Studies 'Seasickness Syndrome'
The Washington Post reports today on research by Dr. Yoon-Hee Cha, visiting assistant researcher in neurology at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, examining mal de debarquement syndrome, an uncommon balance disorder that leaves sufferers feeling seasick. Cha is quoted in the article.

Benhaim, UCLA associate professor of orthopedic and plastic surgery, was quoted Monday in a New York Times article about a new drug treatment for Dupuytren’s contracture, a disorder that causes the fingers to curl immovably into the palm.
Sebastian Edwards
Edwards, the Henry Ford II Professor of International Management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, was quoted Monday in a New York Times article about the economic challenges Chile faces in the wake of the recent devastating earthquake.
Dr. David McAllister
McAllister, professor of orthopedic surgery and chief of sports medicine, was quoted Monday in a Los Angeles Times blog article about soccer player David Beckham’s Achilles tendon injury.
