Mexican, Chicano Recordings Go Digital at UCLA
The public launch of the Arhoolie Strachwitz Frontera Collection of Mexican and Mexican American Recordings at UCLA, the largest online digital archive ofits kind, was reported Thursday by the Associated Press Latin Wire, a Los Angeles Times blog, La Opinión, the Los Angeles Daily Breeze, KPCC-89.3 FM, KSCA-101.9 FM, KMEX-Channel 34, and television networks Televisa, Notimex andAzteca America and Friday by aChronicle of Higher Education blog,La Opinión and the Telemundo network's "Al Rojo Vivo." The digitization of the archive, which is now available through the UCLA Library, was funded by a donation from the popularnorteño group Los Tigres del Norte to UCLA's Chicano Studies Research Center. Center director Chon Noriega was quoted by the AP and La Opinión.
UCLA a Pioneer on New YouTube Channel
A Wall Street Journal blog reported Thursday that UCLA is one of approximately 100 colleges and universities now uploading educational content on YouTube’s new YouTube Edu channel. The piece highlighted UCLA videos on prom-dress rugby and mathematics professor Terence Tao. Genevieve Haines, director of integrated communications for UCLA University Communications, was quoted.
How Insomnia Leads to Weight Problems
The Indo-Asian News Service reported Sunday, and the Spanish-language wire service EFE reported Friday, on a study led by Sarosh Motivala, assistant professor of psychiatryat the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, that found that insomnia disrupts one of two hormones in the human body that regulate appetite. Motivala was quoted.

Inside Higher Ed reported Friday on the opposition of a group of UCLA students to the selection of actor and UCLA alumnus James Franco as UCLA's 2009 commencement speaker. Julie Sina, chief of staff of the UCLA College of Letters and Science, was quoted.
L.A. Premiere of Prof’s Dance Production
Sunday’s Los Angeles Timesfeatured a profile of choreographer and UCLA world arts and cultures professor David Roussève, whose current dance-theater production, “Saudade,” which was co-commissioned by UCLA Live, premieres this week at the Freud Playhouse. Roussève, assistant professor of world arts and cultures Cheng-Chieh Yu and UCLA Live director David Sefton were quoted.

'Earth Hour' Calls for Lights Out
J.R. DeShazo, associate professor of public policy and director of the Ralph and Goldy Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies at the UCLA School of Public Affairs, was interviewed Sunday on NBC's "Today" show and Saturday on CBS News about "Earth Hour," a worldwide initiative that encouraged businesses and households to turn off their lights for one hour on March 28.

An Agence France-Presse article published Saturday about recent U.S. Department of Justice figures indicating that Asian Americans experience less violent crime than other racial groups highlights education and income data on Asian Americans compiled by the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.

San Diego's Spanish-language newspaper El Latino reported Thursday on research by Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda, UCLA associate professor of Chicano studies, on the impact of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Hinojosa-Ojeda was quoted.
UCLA Hospital Named Among Top 125
The Los Angeles Daily News reported Friday that Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center has been selected as one of thecountry'sleading hospitals, and one of the most highly recommendedin a number of medical specialties, in a major survey ofphysicians across the nation.
