UCLA Engineers Develop World's Fastest Camera
Britain’s Daily Mail reports today that researchers at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have developed new camera that captures images roughly a thousand times faster than any existing conventional camera. The story was reported Thursday by CNET and Asian News International and Wednesday by BBC News and Wired. Bahram Jalali, professor of electrical engineering and principal investigator of the project, and research co-author Keisuke Goda, a postdoctoral researcher in engineering, were quoted in the coverage.
Study Gives Clues to Origin of Man
The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Philadelphia Inquirer and Britain’s Daily Mail report today on a study co-authored by Christopher Ehret, UCLA professor of history, and scientists from Europe, Africa and the United States that analyzed the genetic variation and historical linguistics of Africa's San people, who are believed to be the oldest human population on Earth. The Associated Press reported on the study Thursday. Ehret was quoted in the coverage.
Tracking California's Uninsured
An editorial in Thursday’s Stockton Record highlighted findings from a study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research that assessed the number of Californians without health insurance in each of the state's congressional and legislative districts.
Researchers Stand up for Science
Science magazine reports today on last week’s campus rally by UCLA Pro-Test, an organization of faculty, staff and students formed to demonstrate support for lifesaving medical research involving laboratory animals and show solidarity with scientists subjected to harassment and violence by anti–animal research extremists. The group was also highlighted in an op-ed in Thursday’s Los Angeles Daily News condemning anti–animal research extremism. David Jentsch, UCLA associate professor of psychology and a leader of UCLA Pro-Test, and Lynn Fairbanks, UCLA professor-in-residence in the department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences, are quoted in Science.
Film Festival Highlights Latinos in Cinema
Hispanic Business magazine reported Thursday that Chon Noriega, professor of theater, film and television and director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, will provide on-screen insights and commentary for “Race and Hollywood: Latino Images in Film,” a monthlong film festival that will air on the Turner Classic Movies channel this month. Noriega was quoted.
The Origins of Cinco de Mayo
On Thursday, bilingual newspaper chain EGPNews.com featured a column by David Hayes-Bautista, professor of general internal medicine and health services research and director of the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture, on the origin of Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Prof Comments on Bush Torture Memos
Thursday's Los Angeles Times featured an op-ed by David Kaye, executive director of the UCLA School of Law’s International Human Rights Program, on the recently released Bush administration memos that provided the legal underpinnings for prisoner interrogation techniques like waterboarding and sleep deprivation.
