$10 Million Gift to UCLA Finance Center
The Financial Times (U.K.) reports today on Laurence and Lori Fink’s $10 million gift to the UCLA Anderson School of Management to provide funding for the school’s center for finance. In recognition of the gift, the center will be renamed the Laurence D. and Lori W. Fink Center for Finance and Investments.
 
Scientists Studying an Odd Duck
Jerome Siegel, professor-in-residence of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, was interviewed Tuesday for a National Public Radio “All Things Considered” segment about the unusual traits and genetic makeup of the platypus. Siegel has studied the animal’s REM sleep patterns.
 
Film Series Shows Islam in New Light
The Los Angeles Times reports today on the UCLA Film & Television Archive’s new series, “Visualizing the Sacred: Islam on Film,” which features films from throughout the Muslim world dealing with the many facets of the Islamic experience. Paul Malcolm, a programmer with the Archive, is quoted.
 
Rice Getting Harder to Find
Judith Carney, UCLA professor of geography, was interviewed today in an NBC News report about the role rice plays in Asian cultures and the impact the current world rice shortage is having on consumers.
 
San Diego Economy Hits the Skids
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports today on a new study by the UCLA Anderson Forecast showing that San Diego County will continue to be plagued by the crisis in the housing market and rising gas prices. Ryan Ratcliff, an economist with the Forecast, is quoted.

Kent Wong
Wong, director of the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education, is quoted today in a Los Angeles Times article about a former carwash employee calling for a boycott of several Los Angeles carwashes to protest poor pay and working conditions.
