Vitamin D Does Not Cut Breast Cancer Risk
The Los Angeles Times and the Boston Globe report today on a study by Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, professor-in-residence of medicine and chief of medical oncology at Harbor–UCLA Medical Center, that found that vitamin D does not reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Time, Reuters, HealthDay News, WebMD, MedPage Today, the Contra Costa Times, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Canadian Press reported the findings Tuesday. Chlebowski was quoted in the coverage; Dr. David Heber, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, was quoted in the L.A. Times.
 
Medicinal Plant May Help Fight HIV
Asian News International reported Tuesday on a study by Rita Effros, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, that found that a chemical from the Astragalus root, frequently used in Chinese herbal therapy, could become a key weapon in the fight against HIV.
 
Poet–Prof Named U.S. Artists Fellow
A Los Angeles Times blog reported Tuesday that UCLA English professor Harryette Mullen has been selected as a 2008 United States Artists Fellow for her work in poetry.
 
Human Growth Hormone and Sports
The Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday, and the New York Daily News reported Monday, on a Nov. 10 summit sponsored by UCLA and Major League Baseball that examined issues surrounding the use of human growth hormone by professional athletes. Dr. Gary Green, clinical professor of sports medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and medical director of the UCLA Intercollegiate Drug Testing Program, was quoted in the coverage.
