Happy Birthday, Internet!
CNN.com, BBC News, Canada's Globe and Mail and Britain’s Guardian report today on the 40th anniversary of the birth of the Internet at UCLA, which occurred when UCLA distinguished professor of computer science Leonard Kleinrock and his team sent the first host-to-host message over the fledgling network on Oct. 29, 1969. Kleinrock is quoted in the coverage.
Treating Deadly Diseases Through Stem Cell Science
The Los Angeles Daily News reports today that three scientists from UCLA's Broad Stem Cell Research Center have been awarded $49.2 million in grants to translate cutting-edge stem cell science into new therapies for sickle cell disease, HIV/AIDS, and brain, ovarian and colorectal cancers. Quoted in the article were center director Dr. Owen Witte and UCLA grant recipients Dr. Donald Kohn, director of UCLA's Human Gene Medicine Program and a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, and Dr. Dennis Slamon, director of clinical/translational research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and chief of UCLA's division of hematology and oncology. Grant recipient Irvin Chen, director of the UCLA AIDS Institute and a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, was cited.
Billionaire Offers $100 Million to Help Reopen Hospital
The Los Angeles Times reports today that Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, executive director of the UCLA Wireless Health Institute and a visiting professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, has announced plans to provide the University of California Board of Regents with a $100 million guaranty underwriting Los Angeles County's proposol to reopen Martin Luther King Jr.–Harbor Hospital. The article referenced a statement from John Stobo, UC senior vice president for health sciences and services. Soon-Shiong was quoted.
Forecast Sees Recovery in O.C. Housing Market
The Orange Country Register reports today on a UCLA Anderson Forecast report predicting that the median home price in Orange County will increase by approximately 16 percent next year. Mark Schniepp, an economist with the Forecast and author of the report, is quoted.
