Happy 40th Birthday, Internet!
CNN Headline News, National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," a USA Today blog, National Geographic News, United Press International, the Los Angeles Daily Breeze, PC World, Vivelo Hoy, KABC-Channel 7 and the news blog Mashable report today on the 40th anniversary of the birth of the Internet at UCLA, which occurred when UCLA distinguished professor of computer science Leonard Kleinrock and his team at UCLA's engineering school sent the first host-to-host message over the fledgling network on Oct. 29, 1969. Kleinrock was interviewed by NPR and was quoted by National Geographic, UPI and the Daily Breeze.
UCLA Prof Inspires Son’s Award-Winning Book
The Los Angeles Times reports today on "My Father's Paradise," an autobiography by journalist Ariel Sabar inspired by the life of his father, Yona Sabar, a UCLA professor of Near Eastern languages and an immigrant from Kurdish Iraq. Yona Sabar is quoted. The book was named a 2008 National Book Critics Circle Award winner for autobiography.
Treating Deadly Diseases Through Stem Cell Science
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Thursday, and Bloomberg reported Wednesday, that scientists from UCLA's Broad Stem Cell Research Center have been awarded $49.2 million in state grants to translate cutting-edge stem cell science into new therapies for sickle cell disease, HIV/AIDS, and brain, ovarian and colorectal cancers. Grant recipient Dr. Dennis Slamon, director of clinical/translational research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and chief of UCLA's division of hematology and oncology, was cited in the Bloomberg article.
Living Longer and Better Through Technology
Dr. Neil Martin, professor and chair of the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Gary Small, professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and director of the UCLA Center on Aging, were interviewed Thursday on KPCC-89.3 FM's “AirTalk” about the Center on Aging's Oct. 30 conference featuring the latest technological advances that have the potential to help older adults live better for longer.
Forecast Sees Recovery in O.C. Housing Market
KPCC.com reported Thursday on a UCLA Anderson Forecast report predicting that the median home price in Orange County will increase next year. Jerry Nickelsburg, a senior economist with the UCLA Anderson Forecast, was quoted.
Experimenting With Dante at UCLA Live
A Los Angeles Times blog on Thursday featured a review of “Purgatorio,” a co-production between UCLA Live and director Romeo Castellucci’s experimental theater company Societas Raffaello Sanzio inspired by Dante's “Divine Comedy.” The play will run through Saturday at the Freud Playhouse as part of UCLA Live's International Theatre Festival.
Latinos and Health Care in the U.S.
HealthDay News reports today on a study by UCLA researchers that examined perceived differences in the quality and availability of health care among foreign-born, U.S.-born, permanent-resident and undocumented Latinos in the United States. The study was part of a special supplement of the Journal of General Internal Medicine edited by UCLA’s Network for Multicultural Research on Health and Healthcare. Dr. Michael Rodriguez, professor of family medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and co-director of the network, is cited.
