UCLA Profs in Line for Nobel Prize
Reuters and Scientific American reported Wednesday that UCLA professors emeriti of economics Armen Alchian and Harold Demsetz have been picked by information-service provider Thomson Reuters as likely recipients of the Nobel Prize in economics for their work on property rights and the theory of the firm. The Nobel Committee will begin announcing winners next week.
Researcher Protection Bill Signed
Inside Higher Ed reports today that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that will help protect researchers and their families from harassment and violence by animal rights protestors. The article cites UCLA’s restraining order prohibiting several animal extremist organizations and individuals from harassing faculty and administrators.

Saliva Test Can Detect Oral Cancer
Asian News International, the Times of India and the Ivanhoe news service report today on research led by Shen Hu, associate professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry, showing that a simple test of proteins in an individual's saliva can accurately detect a common form of oral cancer. The story was reported Wednesday by WebMD.
