Study Links Soda Consumption, Obesity
The San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Daily Breeze report today on research by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy providing the first scientific evidence of a link between soda consumption and obesity. The Marin Independent Journal reported the story Thursday. Susan Babey, project director at the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, was quoted in the S.F. Chronicle and the Marin Independent Journal.
Solar System's Coldest Spot Is on the Moon
The Associated Press reports today on first moon-temperature data returned by the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment aboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which indicate that in certain moon craters, temperatures are colder than at any other known point in the solar system. UCLA professor of planetary science David Paige, the principal investigator on the Diviner Experiment, is quoted.
Role of Race in Obama's Victory
An article in today's Politics Daily about opposition to President Obama and his policies cites research co-authored by UCLA associate professor of political science Lynn Vavreck exploring the role Obama’s race played in voters’ decisions during the 2008 presidential election. Vavreck is quoted.
How to Conquer 'Chemo Brain'
Dr. Daniel Silverman, associate professor of molecular and medical pharmacology and head of the neuronuclear imaging section at UCLA's Ahmanson Biological Imaging Center, was interviewed Monday on National Public Radio’s “Here & Now” about his book "Your Brain After Chemo," which outlines steps patients can take to address the memory and cognitive problems that often occur after chemotherapy.

David Silver, a senior researcher at the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing at UCLA, was interviewed Wednesday on KPCC-89.3 FM's “AirTalk” about the release of California's Academic Performance Index scores, which measure the performance of K–12 schools.
Telescope Detects Dimmest Objects in Cosmos
Space Daily reported Wednesday on the development of the Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), a powerful space telescope that will have the ability to detect dark and dim objects — including asteroids, dwarf stars and dust clouds — in the spaces between planets and stars. Edward Wright, UCLA professor of physics and astronomy and the principal investigator on WISE, was quoted.
Students Help Clean Up Ballona Wetlands
The current edition of the Santa Monica Mirror reports that more than 60 UCLA student volunteers helped to clean up and restore the Ballona Creek Estuary in Playa del Rey as part of a nationwide day of volunteer service on Sept. 11.
