UCLA Admissions Process Challenged
The Chronicle of Higher Education reported Monday, and Inside Higher Ed reported Tuesday, that UCLA political science professor Timothy Groseclose had resigned from a UCLA admissions committee, saying he suspects campus officials are engaging in unfair admissions practices.
 
Suspect in Westwood Shooting Charged
The Associated Press reported Tuesday that felony charges have been brought against a man who allegedly shot at a traffic light and a building in Westwood Village Friday. A police search of the suspect and his vehicle had turned up five semiautomatic pistols and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Meditation Helps Slow Progression of HIV
The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported Tuesday on a study led by David Creswell, a research scientist at UCLA’s Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, that found that HIV-positive patients suffering from stress who practiced mindfulness meditation were able to stem the loss of CD4 T cells in their immune systems, a characteristic hallmark of HIV progression.

Thursday’s Los Angeles Watts Times featured an op-ed piece by Mike Rose, UCLA professor of education, about blue-collar and service workers being undervalued and ignored by society because of cultural and class stereotyping.

Fonarow, UCLA's Eliot Corday Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Science and director of the Ahmanson–UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center, was quoted Tuesday in a HealthDay News article about an alleged link between the cholesterol drug Vytorin and cancer risk.
