Math Team Finds Largest Known Prime
Britain's Guardian and Australia's The Age report today that a team led by Edson Smith, a computing resource manager with the UCLA Department of Mathematics, has discovered the largest known prime number, which has nearly 13 million digits. The discovery was reported Saturday by the Associated Press, the Los Angeles Times and United Press International and Sunday by Science News, All Headline News and Britain's BBC News, Telegraph, Metro and In the News. Smith was quoted in the coverage.
'Light' Cigarettes Give Heavy Nicotine Punch
HealthDay News and the Los Angeles Times' health blog reported Sunday on research led by Dr. Arthur Brody, professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, that showed that so-called light cigarettes deliver nearly as much nicotine to the brain as regular cigarettes. The research was also reported Saturday by Asian News International and 87 CBS local affiliates.
Getting Your Spending Under Control
An article in Saturday's London Times about controlling the desire to spend money highlights research by Wendy Liu, assistant professor of marketing at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, that found that individuals who were interrupted while considering purchases became less price-conscious in their decision-making process.
